(Mostly) Organic Sazza Restaurant

Monday, July 30

On Saturday night, Christy and I were out looking for plant stands for our 4 new plants. Now that we have a house with many empty corners, we can begin stocking our house with oxygen-loving, air-cleaning plants. So off to every single homegoods store we could think of, the last stop being TJ Max Home store. That place has everything, everything BUT decent plant stands. So, instead, we decided to eat dinner. The third time out that day. Across the parking lot was this place at the end of a strip mall called Sazza. If you live in the Denver area, you must go try this unique/earthy place.

Upon entering this fun, unique eatery, you notice a fresh/tangy scent - not what you would ordinarily smell in a pizza house. I tried to pinpoint it but could not - I am not sure if they had something burning (like essential oils) but it smelled very fresh and clean. Also at the order counter were two large boxes with signs that asked for your donations of spoons, knives and forks. The other box was asking for small and medium only, clean, untattered, unsoiled t-shirts. Not sure what those were for, but the flatware was being used in the restaurant, as both Christy and my silverware was mismatched. I love that idea.

The big collage of artwork on their homepage is featured on the wall in their restaurant as well.

The service was casual but attentive, and we ordered the spinach pizza and had two side salads which were filled with local greens, pine nuts and raisins.

On the outdoor patio next to us were 4 wooden garden boxes with herbs growing in them, basil, thyme, and rosemary which I assume they are using in their organic, local dishes, but maybe not.

It is a local joint with only one spot so far. I highly doubt this will be the only location in the near future.

Lorem Ipsum translation

Friday, July 27

I found this site while reading some of Steven Heller's design interpretations. I never knew this:

The standard Lorem Ipsum passage, used since the 1500s

1914 translation by H. Rackham

"But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?"

Potter Widower

Monday, July 23

Yes, I lost my wife this weekend. She left the world and me for some round eye-glassed pip squeak by the name of Harry Potter.
It was Saturday morning when he arrived to take her away. She has been gone ever since and I cannot wait to have her back.
It was a busy weekend starting Friday night when we took in Cirque du Soleil. Fun, gravity-defying entertainment. Then, I asked Christy if she's still like to try to see the Built to Spill show at the Ogden and she emphatically said "yes!". Amazing energy that pregnant girl has.
Last I checked she was still reading HP at 11:50 pm last night with over 400 pages down. With that type of vigor, I am hoping to have my wife back by Wednesday.

Mrs. and Mr. Gannon at Lewis and Clark Lake

This past Friday, I went back home to celebrate my Dad's birthday. It was a fun trip. 8.5 hours of non-stop seed-spitting, truck stop coffee drinking, iPod blaring, introspective analysis, and windshield bug-slaying. Also, another thing I treasured on my trip was podcasts. I really found the benefit of these "new" audio creations, especially two of them.

These two podcasts, ok, three, because I listened to NPR's Driveway Moments as well, truly made the trip fly by. It is amazing once you get hooked on a story or lecture how many miles you can cover without realizing it. Kinda scary when you think about it...."wait, how long was I just listening- I don't even remember passing my favorite Dairy Queen?"

Happy Birthday, Dad

Keeping your lawn green and GREEN

Thursday, July 12

As with any garden or landscape planning, you must try to be as informed as possible. The options are endless and overwhelming sometimes when you consider all of your possibilities - should i keep a bit swath of grass for kids to play in, or should we plant a bunch of green groundcover to remove the amount of grass we have to water? Then, there is the soil consideration. I just read an article here on the Green Guide website that addresses many of these issues from a couple who moved from the city to the burbs but wanted to make sure their yard as green as possible.

Updated JJ Abrams Mystery Trailer

Tuesday, July 10

I found the actual trailer - no the pirated version....I think. Pretty scary. I think the acting and some of the screaming could have been done better, but for the overall mood, it sets the tone for something scary to come.

Getting de-attached to my spare tire

Monday, July 9

A few days ago, I took the day off work. I had big plans for the day like waking up, going for a run, planting trees and shrubs and finally, watching a few movies that no one else likes. What I ended up doing was the exact opposite, just like George did on Seinfeld. One of those opposites included getting a manicure. Christy wanted to get a pedicure so asked me along. I do not feel I need to apologize or justify getting a nail job because, hey, how can it be unmanly to get something that has the word MAN in it like MANicure. While there, under the nail dryer, I was reading an article about the bad fat in your body and how unhealthy your gut fat (ie. spare tire) is for you. It is the worst place to have fat and also the easiest place to gain it. They had a chart and explanation of the best way to fix your spare tire. It read pretty easy and also made me feel better b/c it was almost the same routine as I have been following. If you are juggling with this spare tire syndrome, you might want to take a look. Now, I think I need another piece of cake.

In case you are going to NYC with your camera...

New York City set to require permits for photography

Some tourists, amateur photographers, even would-be filmmakers hoping to make it big on YouTube could soon be forced to obtain a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance before taking pictures or filming on city property, including sidewalks.

New rules being considered by the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting would require any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a single public location for more than a half hour to get a city permit and insurance.

The same requirements would apply to any group of five or more people who plan to use a tripod in a public location for more than 10 minutes, including the time it takes to set up the equipment.

“While the permitting scheme does not distinguish between commercial and other types of filming, we anticipate that these rules will have minimal, if any, impact on tourists and recreational photographers, including those that use tripods,” Ms. Cho said in an e-mail response to questions.

Get Knocked Up

Tuesday, July 3

After a cool guys weekend up in the mountains - fishing + horseshoeing, I came back to squelching 100 degree heat in the city. To beat the heat, Christy suggested we go see the movie Knocked Up with Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl. Hilarious! You have to see it. You would think with a title like this, and with the mix of a pot-smoking deadbeat and a hot tv producer the makings would be a mash, but this is a "must-have-on-DVD-the-first-day-it-comes-out" movie. The cast is wonderful, the lines are witty and gut-wrenching, and the laughs are endless. Judd Apatow has done it again. In case you didn't know, Judd Apatow also did Freaks and Geeks tv show and 2005's 40-Year Old Virgin.
