What color are you?

Wednesday, January 31

I know I just posted about the new iPod Shuffle colors, but I thought this is a better picture and headline.
I think I am green. Or maybe orange.

iPod Shuffle Color Explosion

Internet Speed Test

Saturday, January 27

The Speakeasy Speed Test.
If you think your connection speed is smokin' fast, confirm it here.
If you think you have a turtle on your desk, confirm it here, also.
The last I checked, I was getting between 5.4 and 6.4MBPS Download and 715 KBPS upload.
Not too bad, but Comcast has some 'splaining to do, since I pay $10 bucks extra for 8 MBPS.
Lovely.

Something to contemplate about our world

Thursday, January 25

Miniature-Earth is an idea of statistics if you could turn the population of the Earth into 100 people with the same proportions, here is what you would get. It is thought provoking at the least. Nice Flash presentation. Clean, simple, and elegant with rich grays and smart use of color and fonts.

Choosing an SLR: Nikon D50/D40 or Canon Digital Rebel XT

Monday, January 22

Calling all readers. I need your advice.

I want to buy a SLR EOS Digital camera and am stuck between two brands/models.

Nikon D50 or Canon Digital Rebel

I don't know too much about the D50 but It has gotten some good reviews and for the price, seems very comparable to the Digital Rebel XT.

I have good luck using our Canon Digital Rebel at work, but I have two good friends that both use Nikon. They both have given me their input and that input says go with either because the are both good for what I want to use it for: Action shots of dogs, weather, yard shots, and some nature and traveling. All of the websites I have perused, CNET, PriceGrabber.com, DPREVIEW- offers side-by-side comparisons of all major camera brands, I love this site. And, even Consumer Reports, all present useful data and informative reviews, but I am still up in the air and think some personal references would be helpful.

Budget: $700
Uses: Catching dogs in the act of play, mischief, and being cute. SNOW. Yard photos. Nature photos. Product shots.

Any info on Nikon or Canon Rebels, would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Bowling with Nuggets

Thursday, January 18

Last night was the annual Bowling with Nuggets at Lucky Strike in the Denver Pavillions.
It was an awesome night. This year, our team members consisted of my lovely wife, Christy, Walmer, Crimmins, The Behrenhausens, and Rachel. Our Nugget team members were Yakhouba Diawara and J.R. Smith.
The mood was a little less relaxed compared to last year, as we think it had to do with the security measures being taken due to the football shootings we had on New Years Eve. Darrent Williams of the Broncos was shot and killed outside a club after the Bronco's game.
We ended up sharing bowling responsibilities with other bowlers so that more got a chance to hit gutter balls. The drinks were flowing quite fluidly and some good appetizers were in the house as well. Coconut shrimp, pizza, spicy chicken skewers and some potato-filled pastries. Here is a pic of me and Jamal Mobley - an assistant coach. Photo by Rachel.

Sam and Tim played pool against A.I. (Allan Iverson) and whipped their butts. They both got AI signed jerseys. Allan is a very cool cat and one awesome player at that. I did not get a chance to hang with him, but he was bowling next to us and he seemed really nice. You'd think I could come up with some better words but no, I can't.

Watch Netflix on Your Computer (ONLY on PC)

Tuesday, January 16

This is a major move from Netflix. When I first read the article I almost did a hip hip horray but once I got into the paragraphs, I wanted to kick the dog! Come on, Microsoft's Windows ONLY? No support for Mac? I guess that shows the marketshare leverage and what Netflix thinks (and knows) most of their subscribers use. But still. I commend Netflix for moving in this direction and will hold out hope that soon I can watch a new movie on my Mac, but until then, if for some reason I desire a DVD that is not in the house or not on top of our TV, that I bump my wife off her office chair, get a bucket of popcorn and take over the Dell.

Another one bites the dust: Switching to Mac.

Monday, January 15

This weekend, Apple gained a convert, and the PC world lost another home user. Meet Marcus.

I epitomize the PC guy in the MAC commercials. Work in finance. Live in Excel. Balding and not very hip. Having been frustrated with my Dell after it seems to have picked up a permanent virus that slowed it to a halt, we bought an iMac on the recommendation of Dave. I do rely on Powerpoint to build presentations, which despite years of use continues to astound me at how difficult it can be to use and create graphics. The iMac is very easy to use and includes programs that are simply superior, such as Keynote - the MAC version of Powerpoint. Powerpoint, however, has been very good at building presentations that only include bullet points, helping cure insomnia among those sitting through a presentation.

While there is a learning curve changing to a Mac, already I notice why it's so attractive to users. Also, there have been some nice surprises, such as the built-in iSight camera that I used for video chats with my family in KY. (Thanks for the free lesson, Dave!) PC users probably have similar programs, yet really the ease of use, getting it up and running and then being able to explain to my parents (a true miracle) how to get their new Mac set up to video conference made it all worth while. We are looking forward to discovering more great uses such as editing video, photos, etc.

Obviously, Marcus found the fun Mac program Photobooth.

Out with the Owens, in with the New ones.

Today we are standing out on our work's balcony watching over on the Capitol as Bill Ritter takes over as our Governor from Bill Owens. My coworkers loved the fraise I coined-- "Out with the Owens in with the New ones" so much that I had to claim it here.
Thanks, GO DEMS!

Winter Weather and the endless subject: Snow

Friday, January 5

Well, I would like to approach some other topics other than snow, but for now, the snow is the bomb. Snow keeps coming down here in Denver, despite what the Farmer's Almanac and weather scientists predicted for this Rockies region.

Every year I anxiously await the arrival of the latest Almanac to give me some snow hope for the coming winter season. I rely on them to keep me informed about other parts of the country as well, like New England and the Plains. This year, they predicted we would have relatively the same weather activity as last year for both here in Denver and for New England. If you have memory of last year you will recall that NE got nailed with what we are getting this year. And last year here, we only got a few small snow storms.

Then, about 3 weeks ago, after our second minor snowfall that broke some tree limbs and caused a ruckus in various ways around town, I heard on NPR and in the news that El Nino was back and he was not going to bless us with any moisture until at least mid-February. I destinctly remember that. Well, we all know how that prediction ended.

Today we are in another Winter Storm Warning with expectations of around 1 foot of snow in the foothills (Boulder, Golden), and we could get that much but probably closer to 8 inches. I was out this morning in my boxers shoveling a place for the doggies to potty and by the time I left for work, there was already another 1/2 inch covering my work. Meanwhile, CNN ran this story yesterday about how warm it has been in NYC which has not seen a dry winter like this in over 100 years. Chicago is in the 50s and Minneapolis is cancelling their snow/ice festivals. Crazy but I love it! Glad I bought snow boots two years ago.
